Dr David Champouillon has been named a performing artist on Bach trumpets for the Conn-Selmer Company. The Bach trumpet has long been considered the instrument of choice by many players worldwide. The selection criteria for becoming a Bach artist included pedagogical and performance experience, credentials, and a national/international reputation as a performer and scholar. Champouillon has also been listed in the book "The Pros Speak - Embouchure" as one of the top fifty trumpeters in the United States and in the "Trumpeter' Handbook II" as one of the influential trumpeters in the world by Schott Publishing, Germany. Twice a Downbeat award winner for Best College Big Band, Dr Champouillon is also a published author, including Bill Pfund's Beginning and Intermediate Trumpet Methods, and an International Trumpet Guild Journal and Conference lecturer. Recordings include two United States Air Force Band albums, a UNC Jazz Ensemble CD, Syracuse Symphony CD, and the NEA funded "Appalachian Harmony". He is also a brass reviewer for Oxford University Press, jazz reviewer for Prentice Hall, and has been named to Who's Who In America (2002, 2003, 3004). Champouillon is currently Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Studies at East Tennessee State University, Executive Director of the Tri-Cities Jazz Fest, and the Principal Trumpet of the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra. He is in constant demand throughout the region in all genres, especially in the performance of Baroque trumpet literature. He has been a frequent soloist with various orchestras, wind ensembles, jazz ensembles, and brass groups throughout the country, having performed in over thirty states and Canada
A former solo trumpet in both classical and jazz idioms in the United States Air Force Band system, he has also been a featured soloist with the Hellenic Camerata (Greece), Westminster Chamber Orchestra, Ogden City, John son City Community Concert Band, ETSU Wind Ensemble, John son City Symphony, University of Northern Colorado Orchestra, Skaneateles Brass Ensemble, and others. He is the former Principal Trumpet of the Salt Lake Symphony, Utah Chamber Orchestra, Ballet West, Utah Opera, AshLawn-Highland Opera Company, Utah Festival Orchestra, Skaneateles Brass Ensemble, and Johnson City Civic Chorale. Extensive performance credits also include the Utah Symphony, Oakland Symphony, Lehigh Chamber Orchestra, Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra, the Syracuse Symphony, Danville Symphony, Greeley Philharmonic, Symphony of the Mountains, and the Southern Mississippi Festival Orchestra, The Moody Blues, Marvin Hammlisch, Mel Torme, Marvin Stamm, Rufus Reid, Ed Soph, Bill Mays, Ed Shaunessy, John Jensen, Don Menza, Arturo Sandoval, Disney Ice Shows, Jerry Butler, Gary Graffman, and Su Li.
He holds the Doctor of Arts in Trumpet Pedagogy/Performance and Theory/Composition from the University of Northern Colorado, the Master of Arts in Music-Trumpet Performance from Eastern Illinois University, the Bachelor of Music in Studio Music and Jazz from the University of Miami, and the Associate of Applied Science - Music from Onondaga Community College (State University of New York.) He has studied trumpet extensively with Elliott Topalian (Syracuse, NY), James Mosher (Syracuse, NY), Daniel Sapochetti (Associate Principal Trumpet - Syracuse Symphony), Laurie McGaw (Associate Principal Trumpet, retired - San Francisco Symphony Orchestra), Gilbert John son (Solo Trumpet, retired - The Philadelphia Orchestra), Edward Gornik (Co-Principal Trumpet - Utah Symphony), George Coble (Principal Trumpet - Syracuse Symphony), and William Fielder (Rutgers University, teacher of Wynton Marsalis).
