On November 13th 2003 the New York Philharmonic's Phil Smith visited the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) to perform and give a master class. The evening began with a performance of Eric Ewazen's Prelude and Fugue for Six Trumpets (Special Supplement to the January 2001 ITG Journal) by the UNC Trumpet Ensemble conducted by Dr. David McChesney. The crowd of over 150 was comprised of students from member institutions of the University of North Carolina system as well as high school students and trumpet enthusiasts from the Triangle area. Mr. Smith performed the Turrin Intrada , the Enesco Legend , the Delmas Variations and the Andante et Scherzo of Barat. Mr. Smith's pieces were interspersed with performances by Will Caviness, a finalist for the 2003 ITG Jazz solo competition, Kevin Crotty, the 2002 ITG Orchestral Excerpt co-winner, and David Suchoff, all members of the UNC trumpet studio. The master class gave Phil the chance to work with these talented students and to field questions from the audience on all aspects of solo and orchestral preparation. All in attendance were thrilled by Phil's control and artistry of the instrument and his command of the pedagogical needs of young performers. The event was hosted by trumpet faculty members James E. Ketch and David McChesney. Phil's visit to UNC was made possible by the support of the Selmer Corporation and the Triangle British Brass Band, directed by Dr. Michael Votta.
