| Matthew Frederick with young people and old instrument |
Matthew Frederick, Assistant Professor of Music at Emory and Henry College, visited East Tennessee State University on November 24th, 2003. He was invited by Assistant Professor of Trumpet Dr. David Champouillon to give a master class presentation for the brass students. The presentation was a historical overview of the brass instruments in the bands of the Civil War era. Highlights of the lecture included rare photographs of Civil War musicians and their instruments and uniforms. Professor Frederick also performed numerous authentic pieces, recreated from his personal study of manuscripts from the Civil War, on both the Eb bass trumpet and the "over the shoulder" Eb cornet. His demonstration and performances displayed wonderful tone/intonation/articulation on a recreation of an instrument that at best would be described as difficult to play and control.
Frederick, who is currently a candidate for a doctor of musical arts degree in trumpet performance at The University of Texas at Austin, received his undergraduate degree in music education from West Chester University in Pennsylvania and a master's degree in trumpet performance from Auburn University in Alabama. He has a wealth of experience in teaching private lessons to brass students, conducting small and large ensembles, and teaching courses for music majors and non-majors. He also provides music clinics for numerous public school band programs.
