Trumpet players Daniel de Gruchy-Lambert and Huw Morgan took first
and third places in the Texaco Young Musician of Wales 2003
competition.
The awards were presented after the competition's final on 29 March.
The five finalists, including the second-placed harpist Elen Hydref
Thomas and the runners-up Davinder Singh (violin) and Rebecca Millward
(clarinet), performed in front of a panel of distinguished judges
and a packed auditorium at Cardiff's Sherman Theatre.
ITG member de Gruchy-Lambert (14) collected the Texaco Young Musician
of Wales trophy and £1,000 prize money for his performance
of Sword and Fire - a circus event in five acts written by
his mother, Heidi de Gruchy-Lambert. He also played the Arutunian
Concerto with the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra. The music
department at his school, Wyclif Independent Christian School, also
receives £1,000 from Texaco. Morgan (15) won the £500
prize for his performance of Bozza's Caprice for his solo
piece and the 2nd and 3rd movements of the Neruda Concerto in
E flat with the orchestra. Both players were also successful participants
in the Youth Competitions at ITG 2002 in Manchester.
More than 100 young musicians took part in the preliminary rounds
and regional finals across Wales. Phil Walters, General Manager
of Texaco's Pembroke Refinery, said: "Texaco would like to
congratulate all the competitors that reached the final: they are
all winners at that stage. As part of our commitment to the Welsh
community, we are proud to be associated with this event which has
made such a positive impact on hundreds of musicians since its foundation
in 1989."
This is the eighth of the biennial competitions sponsored by Texaco
and organised in partnership with Côr Meibion Meibion De Cymru,
the South Wales Male Choir. The television programme of the competition
final is scheduled to appear on HTV Wales on 18 July.
