The University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna (Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien) has announced a three-year research project looking at trumpet design and how players' perceptions and feelings about an instrument can be translated into something which can be measured. Dr Matthias Bertsch of the Institute for Musical Acoustics will present the setup and preliminary results of the project, at the Stockholm Music Acoustic Conference, August 6-9, 2003. Finland From 9-13 September Bertsch will be lecturing at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki on brass and trumpet acoustics and during the week he plans blind performing tests with Finnish players. Simo Rantanen, ITG member and trumpet professor at the Sibelius Academy supports this project together with the dean of the university. US participation sought - Midwest universities In February 2004 Bertsch would like do similar lectures and trumpet
testing workshops in the USA. Mark Schafer from DEG Music is supporting
this project by providing travelling costs and he and Bertsch are
on the lookout for three universities in the US Midwest, to participate
in the project.
The project focuses in part on the opportunity to use player data to enhance the Institute's BIAS (Brass Instrument Analysis System) which offers makers and others the ability to analyse and diagnose instruments and even offer suggestions for improvement. Bertsch comments, "At the moment many brass players and makers don't really know exactly why one instrument is good and others not. One day we will be able to deliver a new tool to measure subjective parameters and to help in designing new instruments for individual players."
