Renowned trumpet virtuoso, Edward H. Tarr, received the degree Doctor of Music, honoris causa, at the 170th Commencement Exercises of Oberlin College, Ohio, on May 26, 2003. Tarr, a 1957 graduate of Oberlin, was praised for his stellar career as a trumpet soloist, his pioneering work in the revival of historical trumpets, his prolific scholarship, and his devotion to teaching.

Tarr was presented for the degree by Steven Plank, Professor of Musicology and Director of the Collegium Musicum Oberliniense. Plank observed that "Tarr has long maintained a range of activity that has been unusually rich and that has provided an inspiring model to countless students who seek to cultivate specialist expertise without renouncing the breadth of vision that nurtures its very meaning."
