Erik Schultz

ITG member Erik Schultz passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2002 after a protracted and courageous battle with cancer. He studied at Calvin College in Michigan and at the University of Calgary. In Europe he studied with Heinz Zickler, Bruce Rhoten, and Gyorgy Geiger. Erik held positions with several major Canadian orchestras, and had long associations with ensembles such as the Canadian Chamber Ensemble, the Gabrieli Brass, the Toronto Virtuoso Ensemble, and the International Brass Soloists. A prolific recitalist and orchestral soloist, Schultz' performing career took him across Canada and throughout Europe. His discography includes over 20 titles on the Cantabile, ESP, EBS Records (Germany), Arte Nova, IBS Records (Canada), and MTG (Norway) labels. Erik was particularly noted for his work on the Clarino or piccolo trumpet and specialized in music of the Baroque. He taught at the University of Western Ontario.

An Erik Schultz Memorial Scholarship will be created to honor his life and work. Anyone interested in contributing should contact the Dean of the UWO Music Faculty, Robert Wood, phone 519-661-2043, email: rwood@uwo.ca
