The Lake Placid Institute is pleased to announce the eighth edition
of the Lake Placid Institute International Trumpet Seminar (July 21 -
August 2, 2003), presented in partnership with the California Institute
of the Arts (CalArts) and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama,
Glasgow.
FACULTY: Edward Carroll, Gabriele Cassone, Mark Gould, Markus Stockhausen,
and John Wallace, with pianists Simon Wright and Rebecca Wilt.
Offering a full range of trumpeting experiences, from the exploration
of the natural trumpet to first performances of important new compositions,
the Lake Placid International Trumpet Seminar has become, since becoming
the Institute's initial offering in 1996, a place where participants are
challenged to look beyond what he or she has already studied and grow
in unexpected musical ways. Participants are asked to work outside their
own self-defined "comfort zone", take new risks, and accept responsibility
for their own technical and musical growth. New works by composers such
as Sir Harrison Birtwistle (composer-in-residence, 1997), Sir Peter Maxwell
Davies, H. K. Gruber, Ned Rorem, Robin Holloway, and Paul Moravec, to
name only a few, have had first hearings at this seminar.
The 2003 edition of the Lake Placid Institute International Trumpet
Seminar will feature "The Complete Trumpeter", a comprehensive look at
the repertoire and playing techniques of the trumpet from 1600 to the
present, including study and performances on the natural trumpet, the
virtuoso cornetist, music from the late 20th Century to today, and the
intuitive improviser. In short, many of the tools one needs to face the
challenges of a radically changing musical landscape.
Early morning yoga classes will be offered by Markus Stockhausen during
week #2. Selected participants will join faculty members in formal concerts
at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts and at the Adirondack Community
Church.
Alongside traditional masterclasses (which focus on repertoire nominated
in advance by each participant), chamber music, and individual tutorials
(4 half hour sessions, presented in "Paris Conservatoire Style" with others
in attendance), the faculty will present a series of workshops, exploring
such topics as:
- MARKUS STOCKHAUSEN
- Creative playing: guides to improvisation and intuitive music making
- EDWARD CARROLL
- Mahler Redux: the complete trumpet parts (with Simon Wright)
- Music in Solitude: music for trumpet alone (Henze, Takemitsu, others)
- GABRIELE CASSONE
- Exploring the peripheries: Bach (natural trumpet) to Berio (Sequenza
X)
- MARK GOULD
- Comparing Trumpet Methods: sorting through the 10,000 things of trumpet
playing
- The Singing Style: idiomatic approaches to music
- JOHN WALLACE
- The Complete Trumpet: repertoire and technique from 1600 to the present
(Mr. Wallace will serve as course leader for this seminar long topic)
