Marco Pierobon

Marco Pierobon (b.1975) has been appointed principal trumpet of the Rome-based Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Italy's highest ranking symphony orchestra. To go to Rome Pierobon has left his position in the "Maggio Musicale" opera orchestra in Florence (conductor Zubin Mehta). His previous positions also include three years as second trumpet in the "Toscanini Orchestra" of Parma, where he lives.

Marco Pierobon's credits as trumpet soloist include performing with the "Haydn" orchestra of Bolzano, the "Olympic Theatre" orchestra of Vicenza, and the "Maggio Musicale" orchestra, with Mehta, in their most recent Japanese tour of 2001. He has also performed with Kery-Lynn Wilson in Florence and in 2000 was invited to the Swiss brass week as "emerging artist."

Pierobon's teachers were: Otto Rabensteiner at the Bolzano conservatoire until 1993, and Roger Bobo/Vinko Globokar at the Fiesole music school. He played in the Italian Youth Orchestra until 1996. His main teacher since 1996 has been Giancarlo Parodi, who is also the manager of Gomalan Brass. Pierobon's masterclass experience includes Rex Martin, Philip Smith, Thomas Stevens and Stephen Burns.

Marco Pierobon's teaching career encompasses three years at the Fiesole music school then a recent move to the Academy of the Maggio Musicale Orchestra. For the last three years he has also given masterclasses at the major music festival of Santafiora (www.santafiorainmusica.com).

The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, which Marco Pierobon joined in January 2003, is an orchestra of 90 players under principal conductor Myung-Whun Chung. They have made fifteen CDs over the last five years, several with the tenor Andrea Bocelli. The orchestra now performs in a new hall l'Auditorium - Parco della Musica, which holds an audience of 2700. Since 1895 the orchestra has given 14,000 concerts, and they have worked with eminent musicians such as Mahler, Debussy, Strauss, Stravinsky, Hindemith, Toscanini, Furtwängler, De Sabata and Karajan. Marco Pierobon is also the leader of Gomalan Brass, and writes most of its arrangements. This brass quintet claimed 1st prize in the International Competition for Brass Ensembles in Passau, Germany, November 2001 (see the earlier ITG news item at www.trumpetguild.org/news/news02/gomalan.htm). Pierobon's first brass quintet "Young Brass" received an excellent review in the ITG Journal (January 2001, by Janel M. Reed, p. 54) for its CD Promenade.

Gomalan's first CD was recorded this summer. Their new CD offers something for every taste, from Verdi and Puccini to The Flintstones via Morricone and Piazzola. All tracks except the first one were arranged by Marco Pierobon himself. Gomalan Brass have been guest artists in international brass festivals including Kalavrita, Greece; Swiss Brass Week; Santafiora Alessi in Italy; and Ticino Musica in Switzerland.
