Edward Tarr
Paolo Bacchin (baroque trumpet) and Steffen Naumann (modern trumpet) claimed first prize in the two Händel competitions in Halle, Germany, June 3-10, 2002. The competitions for baroque trumpet and modern trumpet took place during the Georg Friedrich Händel Festival in the composer's city of birth, Halle an der Saale.

The prizewinners at the competition were:

Baroque trumpet:
1. Paolo Bacchin; teachers: Friedemann Immer and Edward H. Tarr.
2. Jaroslav Roucek; teacher:  Friedemann Immer
3. Pierre Torwald; teachers: Bengt Eklund and Edward. H. Tarr

Modern trumpet:
1. Steffen Naumann; teacher: Peter-Michael Krämer. Mr Naumann is currently solo trumpeter in the Händel Festival Orchestra in Halle.
2. Masaru Gushi; teachers: William Formann. Mr. Gushi is currently working as a freelance trumpeter.
3. Tobias Willner; teacher: Peter-Michael Krämer, Hochschule Leipzig. Mr Willner is currently solo trumpeter in the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jena.

The prizes for both instrument categories were:
1. Prize:   2.500 EUR
2. Prize:   1.500 EUR
3. Prize:   1.000 EUR

The jury for both competitions consisted of:
Prof. Burkhard Glaetzner (Chair), University of Art, Berlin.
Prof. William Forman, Academy of Music "Hanns Eisler", Berlin.
Prof. Friedemann Immer, Academy of Music, Cologne.
Prof. Peter Michael Krämer, Academy of Music "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy", Leipzig.
Dr. Edward H. Tarr, Trumpet Museum, Bad Säckingen.

The competition programs for both the baroque and modern trumpet were extensive, seven works were required and original editions were recommended.

Friedemann Immer
First Round - 2 works
Georg Friedrich Händel's Ouvertüre D-Dur HWV 341
for trumpet and strings.
From Girolamo Fantini's 12 Ricercar 3 Pieces, Edition Tarr-Schule,
Verlag Schott (counted as one work)

Second Round - 3 works
Leopold Mozart's Trumpet Concerto in D-Major,
or
Johann Melchior Molter's Trumpet Concerto no 1 in D-Major.
 Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, one of his sonatas in g minor or c major.
One Italian baroque work for trumpet.

Third Round - 2 works
The competitors were accompanied by a chamber orchestra performing on baroque instruments.
Johann Friedrich Fasch's Trumpet Concerto in D-Major (Concerto a'8, McNaughtan Verlag, Coburg)
Georg Friedrich Händel, two arias from Messiah HWV 56: "The trumpet shall sound" (Nr. 43), and "Pomposo, ma non allegro."

The competition program for modern trumpet was as follows:

First Round - 2 works:
Georg Friedrich Händel's Ouvertüre D-Dur HWV 341 for Trumpet and Strings
From Werner Heider's 12 Fanfares 6 (Peters) for B-flat trumpet

Second Round - 3 works:
One of Michael Haydn's Trumpet Concertos in C-major or D-Major.
or
Johann Nepomuk Hummel's Trumpet concerto in E-Major (E flat-Major)
One work composed after 1970 for trumpet solo.
Paul Hindemith's Sonata for Trumpet and Piano.

Third Round - 2 works:
The competitors were accompanied by a chamber orchestra.
Johann Friedrich Fasch's Trumpet Concerto in D-Major (Concerto a'8 McNaughtan Verlag Coburg)
Georg Friedrich Händel, two arias from Messiah HWV 56: "The trumpet shall sound" (Nr. 43), and "Pomposo, ma non allegro."
