Salvationist record label Egon have announced the launch of a new CD, The Arban Collection, featuring Scottish cornet virtuoso Russell Gray.

The CD offers nine tracks, comprising half of the eighteen solo compositions found at the back of the well-known cornet method, first published in 1864, by Jean Baptiste Arban (1825-1889). The titles in this collection are:

Caprice et Variations; Cavatine de Beatrice di Tenda; Le Cornet Polka; Fantaisie Brillante; Fantaisie et Variations (Sur un Theme Allemand); Fantaisie sur Acteon; Sur L'Opera Il Crociato de Meyerbeer; Variations sur la Tyrolienne; Variations sur Norma.

Arban's own cornet

Recorded in the Winter/Spring of 2002-03, the performances are accompanied by the Foden's Richardson Band, conducted by Roy Newsome and Frank Renton. Interestingly, Gray borrowed Arban's own cornet, of about 1866, to use on the recording. The manufacturer, Courtois, still had the instrument, in excellent condition, and were happy to lend it for this CD. In the sleeve notes, Gray writes about the experience of using this instrument and how the differences between it and the modern cornet affect the performance.

Some of the solos did not have accompaniments for band, so arrangements were commissioned specially for this recording. A planned second CD with the other nine solos will complete the set.
