CalArts student Lisa Edelman performs H. K. Gruber's Exposed Throat in Glasgow, May 9 and London, May 10.

The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) first-year MFA trumpet student performs H. K. Gruber's Exposed Throat, a work for solo trumpet, commissioned for the International Trumpet Guild in 2001 by John Wallace and Edward Carroll, in concert, before performances by the London Sinfonietta, on May 9th at the Academy Concert Hall, Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) in Glasgow, Scotland and on May 10th at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, England.

Edelman joins trumpeters James Watson, Mark O'Keefe, The Royal Academy Brass Soloists (London), the Royal Scottish Academy Brass and Abbos, a group of musicians from Uzbekistan, for a daylong exploration of the trumpet's many roles in different cultures, entitled Trumpets! Both days culminate in World Premiere performances of Gruber's Interact, featuring Wallace as soloist with the London Sinfonietta, conducted by the composer. John Wallace is the Principal of the RSAMD, with which CalArts is developing a variety of exchange programs.

"I am happy to represent my country, New Jersey, CalArts and girl trumpeters - by performing at these exciting events;" said Edelman, "I look forward to traveling to the UK and want to thank Ed and John for all their help in arranging this awesome opportunity."

She has just completed her first year as a graduate student in CalArts' New Millennium Brass Program. A native of New Jersey and graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Edelman has twice participated in the Lake Placid International Trumpet Seminar. Her teachers have included David Bilger and James Thompson. In November of 2001, she was the sole representative in the first Internet-based trumpet masterclass at Eastman, in conjunction with Prof. Bryan Allen of the RSAMD.

Edward Carroll is CalArts' Coordinator of Brass Studies. He joined the faculty of CalArts in 2001, following appointments as the International Chair of Brass Studies at London's Royal Academy of Music, professor of trumpet at the Rotterdam (NL) Conservatory and a distinguished career as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. Carroll served as principal trumpet of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the San Diego Symphony and as associate principal trumpet of the Houston Symphony.
