Alimena and Gilbert Mitchell taking the final bow at the 25th
Anniversary Concert of Brass of Peace. December 28, 2002. |
On December 28, 2002 a large brass ensemble consisting
of alumni and current members of Brass of Peace gave a concert
at Peace Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Virginia. Formed in 1977,
by Gilbert Mitchell, this ensemble provides an opportunity for outstanding
high school brass players to explore repertoire from a wide range
of historical periods. The group rehearses once each week.
Brass of Peace has performed throughout the Washington, D.C. area
including the National Cathedral, the John F. Kennedy Center for
the Performing Arts, the Smithsonian Institution, and at national
conventions. They have been featured on NBC TV, and have performed
several times at the New York Brass Conference, played for services
at St. Patrick's Cathedral, St. Bartholomew's Church, and performed
at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in New York City.
In January of 1990, Sylvia Alimena, a member of the horn section
of the National Symphony, took over as conductor of the group. The
late Philip Jones described the group in a letter to Gilbert Mitchell:
"The recording of your 'annual' brass ensemble gave me great
pleasure. The repertoire is both wide and varied in choice and excellently
performed. What a labor of love it must be for you to reach this
standard of playing each year, only to know that you have to do
all the work over again when 50% leave for college! I think it's
marvelous that you have such enthusiasm and share it with young
brass players. I'm sure they must get a good deal from the experience."
At the 25th anniversary concert the group performed works by Giovanni
Gabrieli, Richard Wagner, Edvard Grieg, Rimsky-Korsakov, Maurice
Ravel, Gabriel Faure, Johann Strauss, Claude Debussy, George Gershwin,
David Uber, and others.
