The University of Reading (UK) announces the tenth birthday of their Music Teaching in Professional Practice (Mtpp) professional development course for instrumental teachers and its associated Summer School which this year included Chaconne Brass.

The course, based at the University's Institute of Education, and developed in association with the Incorporated Society of Musicians, is an "exciting opportunity for practising or aspiring instrumental teachers". In 2003, the initiative attracted students from The Republic of Ireland, Gibraltar and Hong Kong reflecting a growing international presence. Induction takes place at an annual Summer School held in Reading (UK) and students are subsequently engaged with course texts and correspondence or online assignments leading to a postgraduate Diploma or MA degree. Reading tells us that Mtpp "resonates with a unique combination of enormous scope and high-calibre contributors" and cites, for instance, Kevin Thompson's text on brass teaching with Philip Jones, Elgar Howarth and Crispian Steele-Perkins; or Jeffrey Nussbaum's input on the history of brass instruments. Brass educators should take note.

David Baker further reports, "Alongside Mtpp's public workshops and masterclasses in July, Chaconne Brass gave an exhilarating Summer School concert. The ensemble is rapidly becoming one of Britain's most prominent brass quintets through the release of several albums, its radio broadcasts, recitals at London's South Bank, and an appearance on BBC TV. For some pieces, the Chaconne line-up was augmented by youngsters from Berkshire Young Musicians' Trust, demonstrating their commitment to music education. The result: a stimulating, accomplished performance ranging from customary repertoire to jazz and new music, sometimes intensely thought-provoking and sometimes witty - a 'high note' in the Mtpp calendar."
