Ron Modell was in residence at Kansas State University September
16-18 2003, for three days of master classes, lessons, and coaching
sessions. During that time he was able to split his efforts between
master classes and lessons, hearing every student enrolled in trumpet
at the university in one of those two settings. He also worked with
the KSU Symphony Band, Concert Band, Concert Jazz Ensemble, Jazz
Lab A, and Student Brass Quintet.
A highlight of his residency was the convocation of all music majors
on Thursday, September 18th. Modell gave a lecture on Getting Beyond
the Notes that stressed creativity and musicality. During the lecture/presentation
he played several selections accompanied by William Wingfield, KSU
staff accompanist. He also called on David Montgomery, a graduate
student in the KSU trumpet studio, to sight-read one selection.
Attended by about 120 music students and faculty, Modell's lecture
was received with great enthusiasm
afterward a lot of students
headed to the practice rooms!
Thurday evening Ron Modell, his wife Kathy, and the entire KSU
trumpet studio were guests of Gary and Kristin Mortenson for a reception
at their home. Modell talked about his career in both the jazz education
and symphonic realms. Topics included his experiences in the Tulsa
and Dallas Symphonies, his work with the Northern Illinois University
Jazz Ensemble, and his many experiences as a musician/educator over
his long professional career.
Ron Modell's residency was made possible by grants and donations
from the International Trumpet Guild (Chapter Grant), C.G. Conn/Benge,
the Kansas State University Department of Music, and Gary and Kristin
Mortenson.
