David Washburn

Or: The Further Adventures of Brass at Menlo

Following the Brass Institute at Menlo in July, audiences for summer music at Menlo heard yet another treat for the ear on August 5 and 6: David Washburn's brilliant traversal of Bach's Second Brandenburg Concerto with the Music@Menlo chamber players. Washburn mentioned his new Yamaha C trumpet (pictured) as a helpful aid. He impressed hearers, producing a pure, clear, radiant tone with a pleasing brass sonority, yet also compatible with the oboe and flute solos with which the trumpet shares the stage in Brandenburg 2. At the second performance, the admiring audience demanded an encore; taking the finale at a brisker tempo, the chamber group delivered a rollicking account of the movement, crowned by David Washburn's double high C at the end.
