What are the ITG awards?

The ITG Honorary Award

The ITG Honorary Award will be given to those individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the art of trumpet playing. these contributions are through performance, teaching, publishing, research, and/or composition. The tradition has been to award persons only toward the end of their careers, rather than at the beginning or height of their careers. Persons who have been given honorary awards by the ITG include Timofei Dokshizer, Renold Schilke, William Vacchiano, Doc Severinson, Robert King, Raphael Méndez, Roger Voisin, Maurice André, Armando Ghitalla, Louis Armstrong, Clifford Lillya, Robert Nagel, Philip Jones, Vincent Cichowicz, Edward Tarr, Dizzy Gillespie, and Clark Terry.

The ITG Honorary Award does not have to be given every year, and it is possible to award more than one per year. (To maintain the highest prestige of the award, the tradition has been to be extremely selective regarding nominees and recipients).

The ITG Honorary Award can be given only by the Officers and Board of Directors of the ITG through the following nomination/election process:

1. The ITG President shall administer the nominations and elections. (It is recommended that the ITG President initiate the nominations procedure in October of each year or as often as is agreed upon by the Officers and Board of Directors.
2. Nominations for the award may be received from any ITG member, but normally are fielded from the ITG Officers and Board of Directors.
3. Sanction for the award is given upon affirmative vote by a minimum of two thirds of the Board of Directors and the Guild's officers.

The ITG Award of Merit

The ITG Award of Merit shall be given to those individuals who have made substantial contributions to the art of trumpet playing through performance, teaching, publishing, research, composition, and/or support of the goals of The International Trumpet Guild. The past recipients of the ITG Award of Merit are Gordon Mathie, Charles Colin, Steven Glover, John Haynie, Leonard Candelaria and Raymond Crisara.

There will be no requirements that the award be given annually, and no restrictions will be made as to the number of recipients.

The ITG Award of Merit can be given only by the Officers and Board of Directors of the ITG through the following nomination/election process:

1. The ITG President administers the nomination and election process for this award.
2. Nominations can be made by any member of the ITG, but will usually be made by officers or board members.
3. The award will be given to those persons receiving an affirmative vote from a minimum of two thirds of the members of the ITG Board of Directors submitting votes. A minimum of ten affirmative votes is required.
