Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval is releasing his first album as a pianist on Crescent Moon/Columbia Records, entitled My Passion for the Piano, a twelve-tune collection of originals and jazz standards. Sandoval is joined on the recording by bassist Dennis Marks, drummer Ernesto Simpson and special guests saxophonist Ed Calle and percussionist Samuel Torres.
The Havana-born, Miami-based Sandoval credits his audience as one of his main reasons for recording My Passion For The Piano. "For many years people would ask me where they could find a recording of my piano playing," says Sandoval, who would play one or two piano tunes at his performances. "After so many years, I decided it was time to do it." Inspiration also came from his mentor Dizzy Gillespie, who once chided Miles Davis for not knowing how to play the piano, according to Sandoval. He cites Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wynton Kelly and Chucho Valdes as some of his major influences.
