Blunt retires as Principal Trumpet of Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra

After 22 years in the chair, James Blunt has decided to set down as Principal Trumpet of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra (the orchestra of Opera Australia). James is exchanging positions with section trumpeter Burce Hellmers (Treasurer of the Australian Trumpet Guild). After starting with the orchestra in 1978 as a casual player, James became Principal Trumpet in 1979 and has fielded everything that has been thrown at him from Mozart to Mussourgsky and beyond. Bruce joined the orchestra in 1983, following a period in England where he studied with Howard Snell and worked with the Philharmonia Orchestra. Prior to that, he was Principal Trumpet of the Elizabethan Melbourne Orchestra, now known as the State Orchestra of Victoria.

Opera Australia Musical Director, Simone Young, said of the change: "The job of trumpet player in any position in an orchestra is one that places huge demands on the individual. The recent shuffle of the colleagues in the trumpet section is a credit to their versatility and also to their professionalism.

Bruce's first official concert as Principal took place of Friday, October 26, in an all-Wagner program. First piece? Overture to Rienze, of course!

James Morrison 'Scream Machine' Launch

Trumpeter James Morrison has released a new album entitled 'Scream Machine,' a homage to the late Bill Chase, including five trumpets and a rock rhythm section.

Morrison overdubbed all five trumpet parts on the album, but for the recent album launch party at The Basement (Sydney), he was joined by Paul Thorn, Ralph Pyle, Paul Panichi, and Dave Newdick on trumpet.
