Adolph "Bud" Herseth with Field Band trumpets
The United States Army Field Band was proud to host Mr. Adolph "Bud" Herseth, retired principal trumpet of The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, for an afternoon master class and performance on May 20, 2002. Members of the brass section of the Field Band participated in the master class. There were approximately 150 in attendance, which included members of the other D.C. military bands, as well as local civilian musicians.

The afternoon opened with the USAFB Brass Section's performance of the Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare by Richard Strauss, conducted by Capt. Paul Bamonte. Mr. Herseth took the floor and talked about his long and successful career, then requested that the trumpet section play some excerpts. USAFB trumpet section members SFC Virginia Turner, SSG John Altman, SSG Michael Klima, SSG Paul McLaughlin, SSG Jesse Tubb, and SSG James Wood, performed excerpts and received valuable coaching on musical phrasing. Mr. Herseth spoke at length about musical impact and message. "You must get across what the composer intended, not just the notes," he said in reference to the players of today and their technical prowess.

Mr. Herseth stayed well into the afternoon and entertained everyone with his stories, then answered questions from the audience. The gift of his time and talent were invaluable to the musical growth of everyone in attendance. We thank him and wish him a long and happy retirement.
