Gomalan Brass was awarded 1st prize in the International Competition for Brass Ensembles Europe-city Passau Prize, November 2-4, 2001. 2nd prize was awarded to the Ewald Brass Quintet, Hungary (Narbonne competition winner 1998). 3rd prize was awarded to Art of Brass Copenhagen, Denmark (Narbonne competition winner 2000). The Mannheim Brass Quintet received fourth.

The competition was hosted by Mr. Manfred Herre, and took place in the large city hall of Passau, Germany. The competition was open to 4-10 player brass ensembles. There were two categories: Professional and Amateur. 14 professional ensembles participated from Italy, Hungary, Denmark, Russia, Slovenia, Austria, and Slovakia.

The musicians of Gomalan Brass are:

Marco Pierobon, principal trumpet of the Maggio Musicale Opera Orchestra, Florence, Italy.
Marco Braito, principal trumpet of the Orchestra della Toscana, Florence, Italy.
Nilo Caracristi, 3rd horn of the Arena Opera Orchestra, Verona, Italy.
Gianluca Scipioni, principal trombone of the Regio Theater, Turin, Italy.
Oswald Prader, trainee/probationer tuba of the Frankfurter Opera Orchestra, Germany.

The choice of repertoire for the competition was voluntary. Gomalan Brass performed G.Verdi's La forza del destino - sinfonia, J.S. Bach's Violin concerto in A minor, and V. Ewald's Quintet no. 1. In the closing concert Gomalan Brass also performed works by Verdi, Piazzolla, Bernstein, and a arrangement of their own of hits from cartoon music.

The 1st prize was 7000 DM, a Europe-sculpture of Renate König-Schalinski, and a concert engagement. 2nd prize was 4000 DM, and 3rd prize 2000 DM.

Gomalan Brass Quintet is not only a fine brass quintet, they also include programs of humoristic value. During this season they will repeatedly perform Verdi's famous opera Aida, a 50 minutes version for brass quintet where the members themselves perform the dialogs, sing the arias and choruses, and most gracefully include the ballets!
