In August of 2001, while on tour with the Israel Philharmonic in Chile, former Principal Trumpet Andrew Balio gave a very interesting and informative master class at the University of Chile's School of Music. Andrew focused mainly on breathing, breath exercises, and tone production. He also spoke on his eight years as Principal with the Israel Philharmonic. Members of all of Santiago's orchestras attended, as well as members of Chile's National Youth Orchestra, members of the Santiago areas service bands, and students of Eugene King and Javier Contreras, professors at the University.

That evening, all were treated to a memorable performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony. It was one of Andrew's last performances with the Israel Philharmonic as he is now the new principal trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony. All of us here in Chile wish the very best for Andrew in his new position.

The months of September and October were a busy time for Santiago's Philharmonic Brass. A series of concerts were given in and around Santiago, and in La Serena in the north and Concepción in the south. The concerts attracted a wide range of public and promoted Santiago's Municipal Theater, home of Santiago's Philharmonic Orchestra. Music of Scheidt, Speer, Gabreli, Bach, Fisher Tull, Calvert, Gershwin, Bernstein, Paizzola, and Pollack were performed. Santiago's Philharmonic Brass trumpeters are Eugene King and Juan Carlos Urbina.
