Dr. Michael Caldwell, former editor of the ITG Journal (1999-2001), has been appointed Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Director of Jazz Studies at California State University, Fresno, beginning August 2002.

Caldwell earned degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (DMA '97, MM '87), CSU Fresno (BA '84), and Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, California (AA '82). Caldwell was previously a freelance classical and jazz artist in the Seattle, Washington area, along with serving as Co-Director of Music Ministries at Steel Lake Presbyterian Church in Federal Way, Washington. Caldwell also served on the music faculty at the University of South Alabama in Mobile from 1991-1999.

Caldwell was a member of the ITG Board of Directors from 1999-2001 and ITG Public Relations Director from 1997-1999. He has performed with the Seattle Symphony under the baton of Gerard Schwarz, and has served as principal trumpet for the Gulf Coast (Biloxi, MS) and Mobile (AL) Symphony Orchestras. Caldwell has performed on Public Radio International, appeared on The Family Channel (television), and spent many years performing and touring with many notable entertainers. He served as Executive Director of the Mobile Jazz Festival (1992-1995) and founded the National Collegiate Jazz Festival. Caldwell is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and an honorary member of Sigma Alpha Iota. He studied trumpet with Ray Sasaki and Ritchie Clendenin.
