| DiMartino visits UT Martin | January 15, 2002 |
|
West Tennessee-area brass players and UTM students attended master class sessions on October 26 and 27, where DiMartino spent time coaching individual students and discussing his musical concepts and principals. DiMartino encouraged the audience members and participants alike to spend as much time as possible honing their craft, because, as DiMartino explained, "you will never know how good you could have been, unless you do." UTM brass students Charles Mulcahy, Joe Whitson, and Johnathan Allen played on the October 26 master class, and received valuable advice in regards to musical phrasing, tone production, breathing, technique, and musicianship. The master class on the 27th focused on the demands of solo performance. UTM student Ernest Harriss III performed the first movement of Kennan's Sonata. In addition, UTM students Shenika Turner and Joshua Long received valuable suggestions in regard to their performances of DeLuca's Beautiful Colorado, and David's Concertino respectively. DiMartino complimented all the players on their individual preparation and responsiveness. The highlight for all concerned was the afternoon concert featuring DiMartino in concert with the UTM Concert Jazz Band under the direction of Joseph Bowman. DiMartino performed several charts, including songs from The DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra's latest release DOJO. DiMartino soloed on Edgar Crockett's Trumpet Tune and the Jeff Tyzik/Doc Severinsen tune Notte a Roma. Then DiMartino drew standing ovations with his electric performance on the Sammy Nestico arrangement of Dizzy Gillespie's A Night in Tunisa. As an encore, DiMartino brought the house down with his solos on the swing classic In The Mood as arranged by Jeff Tyzik for Doc Severinsen. The artistry and virtuosity displayed left UTM students and audience members alike amazed. The UTM College of Fine Arts, Yamaha, and AMRO Music of Memphis, Tennessee jointly underwrote funding for Vince DiMartino’s UTM appearance.
