Helping The Fires
Bushfires ravaged large parts of New South Wales, Australia, from Christmas day 2001. The whole country got behind a huge effort, which lasted for weeks, and many who could not participate actively in the fighting have found outlet in raising money to assist the victims and fire fighters. The Premier's Christmas 2001 Bushfire Appeal fund has received many donations.
Helping with this cause was Opera Australia, who presented a concert at the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House on February 3. Scores of principals from the company as well as the Opera Australia Chorus, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, all under the Baton of OA MD Simone Young, freely donated their time to help raise over $125,000 for the fund.
Paul Terracini - Conductor
If you have not caught up with the new Australian Broadcasting Corporation CD, "Symphonic Hymns of the Forefathers," you might be inspired when you learn that all the works are arranged and conducted by Australian trumpeter Paul Terracini. No stranger to many Australian Trumpet Guild members, Paul Terracini has packed rather a lot into the years since 1975 when, still a year 12 student, he was appointed Principal Trumpet of the Australian Opera and ballet orchestra.
Following stints studying with William Adam at Indiana University and also as lecturer in trumpet at Queensland conservatorium, Paul has spent the past 10 years as solo Trumpet with the Danish Chamber Players (www.chamberplayers.dk). Most recently he has turned his hand to composing, arranging and conducting and has produced 8 CD's with the Prague Chamber Orchestra. He has also conducted opera in Germany and Denmark as well as performing as solo trumpet in the USA, Australia and numerous European countries.
Martin Philipson To ASO
Sydney Trumpeter Martin Philipson has taken up the associate Principal Trumpet Position with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, following auditions late last year (2001). He joins former ITG contest winner David Elton, James Dempsey and Gregory Frick.
