Ivano Ascari and George Daravelis

Ivano Ascari served as trumpet faculty at the 1st Summer Course for Wind Instruments at the Filomouso Conservatory of Rethymnon, Crete Island, Greece, August 26-31, 2002. Ascari will be performing at the next ITG conference in Fort Worth, Texas, May 21-24, 2003. The event was hosted by George Daravelis, who is the conservatory's artistic director and saxophone teacher.

George Daravelis has composed many works for trumpet, including his Mediterranean Sonata, which consists of 3 movements with a total duration of 11 minutes:

I) Daybreak on Waves. A person confesses his sins to the "Mother Mediterranean Sea." The music is both powerful and gentle.
II) Love Song. An idyllic view of a summer romance unfolding on a small Greek seashore. The melodic style resembles a song from the 60's.
III) Islands with Shining Nights. This movement is written for the islands of the Aegean Sea. It is full of life and dance music, and it is the most difficult one. It has two different themes, many long phrases, and challenges the breath technique of the performer. It also demands very skillful interplay with the piano and ends with a difficult finale.

Ivano Ascari will be performing the Mediterranean Sonata at the 2003 ITG Conference.

The Summer Course featured many works for trumpet and saxophone. Flor de Lino, a Creole waltz for alto saxophone and B-flat trumpet by Argentinean Luis Castillo was written particularly for this course on the island of Crete. Another piece was a Leclair Sonata for 2 wind instruments, which Daravelis and Ascari performed on trumpet and tenor saxophone.

"Ivano did some trumpet duos with a student from Germany called Kristina Heer, they were accompanied by drums. Finally we performed a great Stefano Melloni duo for tenor saxophone and trumpet called Anthema. It's from the collection Advanced Jazz Etudes Duos for 2 wind instruments...Very lovely, indeed, and difficult too!" said George Daravelis enthusiastically, "And can you imagine Ivano, a great classical soloist performing jazz improvisations? He blew our hats off!"

The trumpet and saxophone students present at the summer course were tutored by Ivano Ascari and George Daravelis. The latter also coached chamber music sessions.
