Guido Segers
While trumpeters usually give masterclasses on different styles of music, Guido Segers, Solo trumpeter of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, offers training courses on auditions. The most recent course was organized in Munich, Gasteig, July 30th -August 3rd , 2001.

Every year Guido Segers gathers young brass players for 5 days and teaches them to tackle performance anxiety in audition situations. His collaborators are Will Sanders: former solo horn player at the Bavaria Radio and now professor at the Academy in Karlsruhe, and Wolfram Arndt: former solo trombone player of the Berlin Philharmonic and now Professor at the Academy in Munich.

7 trombonists, 7 hornists, and 7 trumpeters are selected from the applicants. The goal of the course is to enable conservatory students and young orchestral players to offer a rich musical interpretation, no matter how stressful their situation may be.

Breathing Therapy Class
On July 30th every brass player performed a full audition program in a very genuine situation. Everyone had trembling knees, cardboard tongues, and "rabbit hearts." Several of the performances could probably have been subject to the rejective "Thank you!" from any real jury. Guido Seger’s Audition Training Course is for musicians who dare face their own fears and are ready for a change.

Each student was now highly motivated, and most eager to enter the consequent training program which encompassed sessions on breathing therapy given by Isa Terwiesche. She is licensed for teaching Breathing, Speech, and Voice, and she works at the University of Munich, and in the European institute of Music Medicine in Munich.

The participants also went through sessions of mental preparation coached by Guido Segers and soloists from internationally renown orchestras. Through the evenings the young musicians received another type of training through special loud reading sessions.

On the last day of the course all participants performed their audition program over again. Exactly the same type of stressful setting was provided as on the first day. But now the young trumpeters displayed far more control, and performed their pieces with a convincing musicality that would please any jury!

The next Audition Course is planned for end of July 2002. Applications can be sent to:
