Vassily Fyodorovich Pulatov (1920 - 2000)
Born in the village of Ravat, Uzbekistan, on December 29, 1920, Vassily Pulatov completed his early music studies at the Tashkent Conservatory, studying the trumpet under the tutelage of Prof. Ivan Loginov. During World War II Pulatov served with honor and distinction in the Russian military earning numerous medals and awards for courage in battle. From 1948 to 1953 Pulatov performed as a member of the UzbekSSR Radio Orchestra as well as in the orchestras of the Tashkent Opera and Ballet Theater. At the same time he was trumpet instructor at the Tashkent Musical College and the Special Music School affiliated with the conservatory.

In 1956 he completed his post-graduate degree (Aspirantura) at the Moscow State Conservatory named after Tchaikovsky. During his Moscow studies he was a member of the trumpet class of Georgyi Orvid and he received additional instruction under Mikhail Tabakov. From 1956 to 1967 he served as Principal Solo Trumpet of the Tashkent Opera and Ballet Theater Symphony Orchestra. From 1956 he until his retirement from teaching some thirty years later he served on the faculty of the Tashkent Conservatory, rising to rank of Professor of Music in 1979. He served twice as Chair of the Wind Department and also as Associate Dean of the Conservatory from 1967 to 1971.

Pulatov was the author of several pedagogical books and articles printed in Russian musical literature including: Trumpet Tutor I (1979); Basic Questions/Issues of Trumpet Teaching Methodology; About the Mouthpiece Placement on the Lips; and Three Principles of Trumpet Instruction. Among his many successful students are included Anatoly Selianin, Rem Gehkt, Victor Verigin, Murat Muhitdinov, Yuri Parfyonov, Lev Roitblat, Grigor Terzyan and others. He served as a member for the jury for the 1996 Vassily Brandt International Trumpet Competition that was organized by his former pupil and EURO-ITG Vice-President, Anatoly Selianin, and was held in Saratov, Russia.

Pulatov's long-time colleague, Sergei Burhanov, Peoples Artist of the Uzbekistan Republic, described Pulatov's musical character as follows:

"His understanding of the musical content, and his penetration into the imagery-emotional sphere of compositions performed in Pulatov's solo appearances with the Uzbek Radio S. O. and the Navoi Theater's orchestra, have always delighted me. His interpretation of the well-known Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by Vassilenko, and of the wonderful piece by the Uzbek composer, D. Zakirov, were marked with a high level of culture in performance. Thanks to Pulatov's initiative, perhaps all major works for trumpet have been performed in Tashkent. A number of new compositions have been created by Uzbek composers and premiered by Pulatov. Being a musician of high culture, he personifies the best traditions of the national art in performance and pedagogy."

When once asked what Pulatov, his teacher, had given him of lasting musical value, Anatoly Selianin, Pulatov's former student and later his section-mate in the Tashkent Opera and Ballet Theater Orchestra unhesitatingly replied, "He gave me everything that he could. What more could any student ever ask of one's teacher?"
