Natalo A Paella (1927 - 2001)
Natalo A. Paella, trumpeter with the Boston Pops and Boston Symphony Orchestra, died January 25, 2001, of leukemia at the age of 73.

Paella attended the Eastman School of Music and the U.S. Navy School of Music, and received a bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University and a master's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music.

For fifteen years, beginning in 1957, Paella performed with the Boston Pops and Esplanade Orchestra, under the direction of Arthur Fiedler. He played also with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Pierre Monteaux, Charles Munch, Leonard Bernstein, and Erich Leinsdorf.

Mr. Paella's flexibility and diverse taste in music led him also to perform as principal trumpet of the Boston Colonial Theatre for twenty-six years, where he performed many musicals, and also to accompany many prominent performers and entertainers, including such luminaries as Sammy Davis Jr., Lena Horne, Rich Little, and many others.

In 1965 he began teaching music at the University of Lowell, including studio trumpet, brass pedagogy, brass ensembles, and jazz orchestra. In 1994, he assumed the rank of Professor Emeritus.

In 1981, he founded the Paella Brass, a quintet which was highly active in the Boston area performing at many ceremonial and concert events. His wife of 46 years, Jeanne E. Paella, performed on French Horn in this quintet.

Paella is survived by his wife Jeanne and a son, Vincent, of Lexington, Massachusetts.
