Bottom to University of Missouri

Stephen K. Bottom
Stephen K. Bottom was recently appointed Professor of Trumpet at the University of Missouri (Columbia). He previously held the same position at Bellarmine College and Campbellsville University. A native of Lexington, KY, Steve's major trumpet teachers were Rich Illman, Vince DiMartino, Mike Tunnell, and Rolf Holly. His major jazz teachers were Jamey Aebersold, Miles Osland, and John LaBarbera.

Stephen has appeared as a soloist on National Public Radio and British Broadcasting Company Radio. A former winner of several national and international competitions, including the National Trumpet Competition, he now tours the United States as Eb Comet Soloist with Saxton's Cornet Band, with who he has appeared in the motion pictures Gettysburg and The Day Lincoln Was Shot. Other activities include touring and recording as co-lead trumpet with the Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra and the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra. Recordings by both ensembles can be found on Seabreeze Jazz Records. Steve's debut solo CD is currently in postproduction, with an anticipated release date of Summer 2001.

Mr. Bottom also tours the United States and Europe as a Performing Artist and Educational Clinician for United Musical Instruments, Inc. He performs on Conn and King trumpets.

Bowman to UT Martin

Joseph Bowman has been appointed Assistant Professor of Trumpet at The University of Tennessee at Martin. In addition to his duties with the trumpet studio, he will direct the UTM Concert Jazz Band.

Prior to this position, Bowman served as a Graduate Trumpet Teaching Assistant at Arizona State University. He is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University under Regents' Professor David R. Hickman. Bowman has performed with the Phoenix Symphony, Sun Cities Symphony, Hot Springs Festival Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Philharmonia among others, and has solo performances in the United States and Europe. As a performer, he has recorded for Summit, D'Note, and Naxos American. He has over twenty publications in the ITG Journal and NACWPI Journal.

Bowman holds a BM degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and an MM from Arizona State University. His former teachers include Alan Siebert, Marie Speziale, Matt Sonneborn, Pat Harbison, and Gary Davis.
