The Chicago Symphony Orchestra today announced that 32-year-old trumpeter Craig Morris has been appointed to the position of Principal Trumpet. Current CSO Principal Trumpet Adolph Herseth will retire at the conclusion of the Orchestra's 2001 summer Ravinia Festival season after a 53-year tenure with the CSO.

Craig Morris comes to the CSO from the San Francisco Symphony where he has held the position of Associate Principal since 1998. Prior to joining the SFS, he was briefly a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, performing as Fourth/Utility Trumpet in 1998.

Mr. Morris has also performed as a member of the Dallas Brass, an international touring brass quintet. He was Principal Trumpet of the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra, Opera, and Ballet from 1994 to 1996 and a member of the Pinnacle Brass Quintet from 1991 through 1994. His solo engagements have included appearances with the San Francisco Symphony, Sacramento Symphony Orchestra, Austin Handel-Haydn Society, Diablo Symphony Orchestra, and the San Francisco Old & New Music Ensemble.

A Texas native, Mr. Morris was raised in a musical family. His late father Cecil Morris, a band director and tuba player, was a major musical influence. Mr. Morris earned his bachelor's degree in music from the University of Texas, where he studied with Raymond Crisara. He continued his studies, earning his master's degree at the San Francisco Conservatory in 1991, studying with Glenn Fischthal, Principal Trumpet of the San Francisco Symphony. After returning to Texas, Craig studied with Don Jacoby, a former Chicago freelance artist, and James Wilt, Associate Principal Trumpet of the Houston Symphony, who helped guide him into a career as a professional orchestra musician.
