| Jazz Workshop in Lichtenstein | February 11, 2001 |
The Jazz Workshop of the 30th International Master Courses in music at Vaduz, Lichtenstein, took place in the Liechtensteinische Musikschule from July 12-22, 2000. This was the 5th time the Jazz Workshop has taken place, and the 3rd time Matthieu Michel has served as trumpet faculty. Matthieu Michel (Switzerland) is a renowned jazz trumpet soloist and composer who consistently is found touring Europe, Canada, the USA, the Far East and Northern Africa. He is frequently called upon to headline Jazz Festivals all over the world. Matthieu Michel has released seven CDs and served as a sideman on almost 100 others. The Master Course, which comprised workshops for voice and various instruments, attracted advanced amateur musicians, students and professional musicians. A well-attended concert given by the academic staff in the middle of the week supplemented the classes. On this program Matthieu Michel performed one of his own compositions, Okipik, together with a rhythm section. This six minute piece can be enjoyed (in duo with pianist Uli Scherer) on Matthieu Michel's CD from 1994 carrying the same name. Each morning the teachers gave individual lessons to the attendants. In the afternoons, the participants formed small jazz groups (4-8 players each) and were tutored in performing standard repertoire. The result of this work was featured on the final concert, which featured the participants themselves. In the evenings, all the rooms containing the different instruments were open to the attendants. They could use them freely for 'jam sessions' as much as they liked. Matthieu Michel also gave a jazz workshop in Viktring, Austria, in the summer of 2000. There he primarily coached students on the art of jazz composition. Read more about Matthieu Michel on his web page:
