| The 4th International Course for Brass Instruments Kalavritas, Greece | October 26, 2001 |
|
The expectant atmosphere among the teachers and students urged every one to do their very best. Private lessons and group sessions were offered where no musical style was left untouched. A total of 100 students and 20 teachers were greatly inspired through teaching and learning. For the opening concert, the Ferus Mustafov Band from Balkans displayed breathtaking technical skills in traditional Balkan music, full of energy. A few nights later the talented Gomalan Brass Quintet inspired and satisfied everyone. On August 10th Vincent Di Martino made the stars shoot in his outdoor jazz concert. What a treat! Saturday night culminated in a performance with an ad hoc quintet: Vince DiMartino, Yannis Karabetsos, David Ohanian, Scott Hartmann and Oswald Prader. The closing concert kept all students and teachers busy and happy. Trumpet soloists were Vincent DiMartino, USA. George Babarakos, Greece, and Arda Cabaoglou, Turkey. Gerassimos Ioannidis, Greece, was the director. "Kalavrita 2001 provided the possibly best master class situation in which I have worked", says Vincent DiMartino, "Gerry and George did this by enjoying every minute and going non stop all the way!" For 5 days Yamaha Europe was present and provided new instruments for everyone to try. "Vince even took a bus load of kids from Cyprus under his wings", says George, "They knew nothing about music, but within an hour they had all played!" Next year's course, The 5th International Brass and Wind Course is scheduled for August 2-11. The Musical center of Kalavrita will use all their attractive qualities to make Vincent DiMartino and Gerassimos Ioanidis return, hopefully also joined by Fred Mills!
