James Olcott, outgoing president of ITG, has made an offer no trumpet player can refuse. In light of the recent events in the United States, Olcott, an arranger and publisher of music for trumpet ensemble, has made the score and parts to his heretofore unpublished transcription for 12 trumpets of Carmon Dragon's famous arrangement of America the Beautiful available for free download. The manuscript is coupled with his arrangement for 6-10 B-flat trumpets of The Star Spangled Banner. America the Beautiful calls for two B-flat piccolo trumpets, two E-flat trumpets, two C trumpets, four B-flat trumpets, and two flugelhorns.

In a letter to the Trumpet Players International Network, Olcott wrote:

A special prayer service was held at Miami University of Ohio on Friday, September 14 in conjunction with the the National Day of Prayer service at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Well over 5000 students, faculty and townspeople attended the service which included the broadcast of the Washington service sandwiched by words by the university's president and performances by the university's choirs and the Miami University Trumpet Ensemble. Our ensemble began the service, playing the 2-minute Heralding by Ronald LoPresti, which features a lonely, mournful solo trumpet and three antiphonal groups of four trumpets each, all coming to the support of the soloist with increasing strength and confidence, all a perfect metaphor for the day. We finished the 95-minute service with a performance of my own transcription for 12 trumpets of the famous Carmon Dragon arrangement of America the Beautiful, first played at the ITG conference in Baltimore about 10 years ago. The piece had a startling, if not unexpected, effect, for at the end there was an immediate and spontaneous standing ovation from the entire audience, with sobs and tears and extended applause. It was a very moving moment for all of us, to say the least.

In my own capacity as a trumpeter, teacher, trumpet ensemble arranger, publisher, and ITGer, I am inspired by the national circumstances of the day, by my students, by the power of music, and by the examples set forth by so many of you as trumpet players, to forward (these arrangements)." He also thanked Sam Fox Publishing Company for giving him permission to offer his transcription at no cost.
