Goni Eshed
Trumpeter Goni Eshed, born January 30th 1987, won the National Competition for Israeli Brass & Woodwind Players in Jerusalem, April 4th, 2001. The competition was hosted by The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, and was open for contestants under 19 years of age. Goni Eshed on trumpet was the youngest of 20 contestants in the brass category, which also included saxophones.

The first round took place April 2nd. Goni performed Sonatine for Trumpet & Piano by Jean Francaix, and Concerto No. 1 in Eb Major by J. W. Hertel. In the finals on April 4th he peformed Concerto by J.N. Hummel, and an atonal work Sonatina for solo trumpet: Molto adagio, Presto assai, Senza misura ad libitum, Tempo giusto by the Israeli composer Sergiu Natra. At the gala concert on April 16th 2001 in the Jerusalem Academy concert hall, Goni Eshed performed Old/New for solo trumpet by Maurice Kagel.

Tzvi Ostrovsky - Trombone, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (emeritus).
Elyahu Turner - Principal oboe, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (emeritus).
Prof. Avner Biron - Head, Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.
Michal Meltzer - Deputy, Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.
Ilan Shol - Dean of the Art and Performance faculty, Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.
Rami Tal - Assistant principal flute, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.

Goni Eshed was raised in a musical family. He practices under the supervision of his father Ilan Eshed, who is a former student of Adolph Herseth. Ilan Eshed holds the position as assistant principal trumpeter of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Goni Eshed has studied many different instruments in his young life. He started on the violin at 6, and added the recorder, saxophone, French horn, and oboe over the next years. At the age of 10 he began studying the trumpet with his father. After one year of practicing, he performed Hummel's concerto. At age 12 he started playing the piccolo trumpet and bass guitar (jazz).

Goni Eshed also consults Reinhold Friedrich and Håkan Hardenberger because of their brilliance in Contemporary and Baroque music and receives valuable advice through lessons with Bo Nilsson and Guy Touvron. This summer he attended master classes by Marcus Stockhausen, Maurice André and Pierre Thibaud.

Goni is currently preparing Nobody Knows de Trouble I See by Bernd Alois Zimmermann, and Incantation, Thréne, et Danse by Alfred Desenclos. His is a career which trumpeters should follow with some interest in the future.
