New Book Released by Keith JohnsonKeith Johnson, Regents Professor of Trumpet at the University of North Texas, recently published a new textbook, Brass Performance and Pedagogy (Prentice Hall). His earlier book, The Art of Trumpet Playing, is also still in print and is available through Robert King Music and Portland Sheet Music Service.Source: Keith Johnson Hank Levy (1927 - 2001)Hank Levy, world-renowned Jazz composer, died on 9/10/01 after a lengthy illness. He composed and arranged for (to name the 2 most prominent orchestras) Stan Kenton & Don Ellis. Hank changed the face of big band music in the late 1960's with his book, The Time Revolution. He and Don Ellis experimented with not only odd meters, but also different permutations of the beats of those odd meters. Hank retired as head of Towson State University's Jazz Department in 1991. A bari sax player by trade (& barely that, as he would joke!), Hank started arranging for Stan in the '60's. Hank continued writing until his death, and had, for the past 10 years, led a band consisting of Towson alumni. He will be greatly missed.Source: Christopher Hutton Atlantic Brass Quintet SeminarThe Atlantic Brass Quintet will hold its International Brass Quintet Seminar at the University at Buffalo from July 29 - August 9 Hosted by Jon Nelson, the seminar will include daily coachings with ABQ and other faculty, ABQ concerts, and masterclasses.
