| Trumpeters Send Notice Of Events In The Wake Of Sept. 11 | November 10, 2001 |
|
ITG received notice of a few of what were, no doubt, many services in remembrance of the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington D.C. Included were: The Sanctuary Orchestra of First Baptist Church in Dallas, TX performed a multimedia presentation of John William's "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan" on October 7. The music accompanied photographs of the events at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Billy's Brass Band in Portland, Oregon, an eclectic group comprised of 6 trumpets, 5 trombones, a mellophone, marching baritone, 2 tubas, 2 drummers, and 3 saxes, had some interesting experiences during performances on the weekend following the attacks. Initially they added "God Bless America" to their high-energy presentation at the Puyallup Fair near Tacoma, Washington, but found that the piece, although moving and well-received, 'brought the audience down.' In their subsequent performances they omitted the piece from their program and found that the audiences appreciated the opportunity to laugh and smile for awhile and temporarily escape the reality of what had occurred. Australian Trumpet Guild President Brian Evans was the soloist and musical organizer of a service held on September 23 in Sydney which honored American and Australian victims of the attacks. The service was sponsored by The Churches of Wahroonga (near Sydney) and included the American and Australian national anthems, among other pieces.
