On February 11th and 13th, 2000, The United States Naval Academy Band Brass Ensemble performed under the direction of Dr. Milt Stevens, principal trombone of the National Symphony Orchestra. The concerts took place in the historic Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Maryland and the Gordon Center for Performing Arts in Owings Mills, Maryland.

CDR J. Michael Alverson, Director of Naval Academy Band, hosted and began each of the concerts with Elgar Howarth's arrangement of "The Earle of Oxford's March." Dr. Stevens then took the podium and began his portion of the program with an Eric Crees arrangement of J.S. Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor. The next selection was an arrangement of Leonard Bernstein's Three Dance Episodes from On The Town, "The Great Lover," "Lonely Town: Pas De Deux," and "Times Square: 1944." This music, from the musical about three sailors on liberty passes in New York City, was expertly arranged by Phil Snedecor.

The second half of the program consisted of only one work, Pictures At An Exhibition. Dr. Stevens chose an arrangement by Elgar Howarth, made famous by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, of Modest Mussorgsky's work for solo piano. The twenty three members of the ensemble were certainly up for and met the challenge of this arrangement. Of note was the ensemble playing of the low brass, the versatility of trumpeter MU2 Brian Strawley, the flugel horn playing of MU2 Ken Pfabe, and the speed and agility of the percussion section to cover so many parts.

This was the fourth year that the Brass Ensemble has performed as part of USNA Band's Recital Series at the Naval Academy.
