On Saturday, January 22, 2000 world-renowned trumpeter and master teacher, Armando Ghitalla, gave a series of master classes at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette School of Music. The sessions took place at one o'clock and three o'clock pm and were followed by a gala trumpet concert at 7:30 pm. About seventy trumpeters from six Louisiana Universities and local high schools attended. Seven students performed in the classes.

Mr. Ghitalla started the master classes with a detailed study of the embouchure. Throughout the sessions he emphasized lip buzzing without the mouthpiece to achieve strength and the proper lip roll in. Through buzzing and note bending, students were able to achieve less motion in the embouchure which resulted in more accurate performances. He also advocated using an 'eeee' syllable for all notes to keep the tongue placement high in the low range. A noticeable improvement was noted in all performers as a result of Mr. Ghitalla's suggestions.

The evening concert featured collegiate trumpet ensembles from University of Louisiana at Lafayette (Dr. Paul Morton, Director), Northwestern State University (Mr. Galindo Rodriguez, Director), Louisiana State University (Mr. James West, Director), McNeese State University (Mr. David Scott, Director), and University of Southeastern Louisiana (Dr. Bryan DePoy, Director). The concert concluded with a mass trumpet ensemble conducted by Mr. Ghitalla that performed The Canterbury Flourish by Gordon Jacob.

Mr. Ghitalla has taught at several prestigious music schools including the New England Conservatory, Boston University, and the University of Michigan. Mr. Ghitalla is presently teaching trumpet at Rice University.
