Vincent Cichowicz
Vincent Cichowicz, esteemed Northwestern University Professor of Trumpet Emeritus and former member of the Chicago Symphony, presented two masterclasses on February 26, 2000 in the Rehearsal Hall of the Murchison Performing Arts Center at the University of North Texas. Hosted by the North Texas Chapter of ITG, the masterclasses were organized by UNT Professor of Trumpet and ITG Past President, Dr. Leonard Candelaria. Candelaria earned the Doctor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from Northwestern University under the tutelage of Vincent Cichowicz and was extremely delighted to invite his teacher and mentor to the UNT campus.

More than 80 North Texas-area trumpeters attended the morning and afternoon sessions which presented a number of UNT trumpet students an opportunity to receive musical guidance and personal encouragements from the master teacher. The morning session began by Mr. Cichowicz sharing with the audience his perspectives regarding the current state of the trumpet-playing art and the music profession. The remainder of the class focused on the development and maintenance of basic trumpet-playing skills.

UNT undergraduate trumpeters, Casey Matthews, Michael Bookman, Jason Cordoba and Griffen Goodman. performed individually for the masterclass. They received many valuable suggestions regarding essential aspects of tone production, respiration, technical execution, articulation and general musicianship.

The afternoon masterclass began by focusing on elements of artistry in solo performance. UNT doctoral students, James Wood and Brendan Kierman, performed portions of the Sonata by Ewazen and the Concerto in E-flat by Haydn, respectively. The remainder of the afternoon was devoted to orchestral repertoire and standard audition material. Performers included UNT Symphony Orchestra trumpeters Iskander Akhmadullin, Michael Samford and Daniel Lindgren.

Mr. Cichowicz complimented the three players on their individual skills as well as for the uniformity of sound and excellent ensemble they demonstrated as a trumpet section.

To hear Vincent Cichowicz speak on a variety of musical topics and to observe his work with talented trumpet students was a special opportunity for all those in attendance. The clarity and succinctness of his musical comments coupled with his uniquely gracious manner clearly revealed why Vincent Cichowicz is revered and respected nationally and internationally a true master teacher.

Funding for Vincent Cichowicz' UNT appearance was jointly underwritten by the University of North Texas College of Music and by the generous support provided by an Affiliate Chapter Grant from the International Trumpet Guild.
