Pierre Thibaud with Marco Braito
Master teacher and living legend Pierre Thibaud was invited for the fourth year to give the annual masterclasses at the institute of the Fondazione Musicale Cittą di Gorizia (Musical Foundation of the City of Gorizia) from Sept. 18-23. Students from Italy and the neighboring countries Slovenia and Croatia participated with great interest. The masterclasses were hosted by one of Pierre Thibaud's former students, Roberto Caterini, who teaches at the institute and plays second trumpet in the Chamber Orchestra of Padova and Veneto. He also gave a seminar on the brass ensemble. Diego Cal, solo trumpeter of the same orchestra, gave a seminar on the natural trumpet, while Marco Braito, principal trumpeter of the Regional Orchestra of Tuscany, served as Thibaud's official assistant. Andrea Dell'Ira was the celebrated guest of the conference.

Thibaud, from the National Superior Conservatory of Paris, charmed the young participants with his unending enthusiasm for the instrument. He was highly effective with the students, who flourished from the impact of his youthful spirit and strong desire to share his methods and experience.

Thibaud's fundamental concept was the importance of protecting the lips with pedal tones and double pedals, based on the well-known book of studies by James Stamp. Thibaud said that the explanations in the Stamp book are not completely clear, because Stamp did not write them himself.

An interesting point was Thibaud's assertion that the progress of trumpet music through his own lifetime was due in large part to jazz trumpet players, who have revolutionized the manner of studying and conceiving the instrument and its literature. Likewise he found it important that the modern trumpet player also studies the natural trumpet to develop his artistic sensibility and ability to express his emotions and individuality.

Diego Cal's academic knowledge of the trumpet and his way of demonstrating his didactics was a gift to the student's great curiosity for the natural trumpet. Cal emphasized the resemblance and difference between historic and modern instruments as well as diversities of styles, techniques, ways of playing, and literature through history. He wanted to give the attendants a "total" knowledge of how to play music from different epochs. He also pointed out the great benefits of transferring skills on historic instruments to the modern ones. Emission of air through the instrument and maintenance of pitch were claimed as the most obvious benefits.

One of the highlights of the trumpet days in Gorizia was a concert featuring Pierre Thibaud, Gabriele Cassone, and Cal Diego's brass ensemble Arabesque with the French trombonist Daniel Breszynski, winner of the International Competition of Porcia.

Due to the high attendance of the masterclasses for modern and natural trumpets, they are planned again next year, hopefully also including the very popular jazz interpretation workshop with Kenny Wheeler!
