The third annual Tennessee Trumpet Competition (TTC) and Trumpet Seminar was held at Tennessee Technological University on January 15, 2000, and attended by more than 40 high school, university, and professional trumpeters. The event was coordinated by TTU Trumpet Professor Charles Decker and co-sponsored by Tennessee Technological University, the International Trumpet Guild, Selmer Music Corporation, Howard Turner, and Kim and Charles Decker.

Selmer/Bach artist Raymond Crisara was the guest clinician. Crisara is Professor of Trumpet at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is a member of the UT Academy of Distinguished Teaching Professors. In four decades of performance work in New York City, Crisara established an enduring reputation for versatility in all areas of musical expression including jingles, recordings, films, radio, television, and concerts ranging from Toscanini to Alice Cooper and Kiss. His stature among trumpeters is so significant that he was the subject of three articles which appeared in the March 2000 Journal of the International Trumpet Guild.

Crisara's well-received and thoughtful clinic focused on improving control of the instrument through a common sense and methodical approach to addressing the technical challenges that face trumpeters daily. An additional session demonstrated Crisara's deep and perceptive understanding of the art of performance and the challenge to performers of communicating aesthetic ideals to the audience. Crisara also presented an illuminating lecture which provided an in-depth perspective of his wide variety of performance experiences over forty years in New York City.

The day concluded with an evening band concert featuring the Tennessee Technological University Trumpet Ensemble performing the Sokol Fanfare from the Sinfonietta by Leos Janacek, and Crisara students Charles Decker, Erich Zimmerman, and Wayne Robbins performing Three Solitaires by Victor Herbert.

A staff of nine Tennessee trumpet professionals served as adjudicators and performers, including Ezra Adams of Carson-Newman College, Cliff Blackburn of Blackburn Trumpets, Stephen Collins of the St. Joseph Symphony of Missouri, Tina Erikson of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Cathy Leach of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Alan Suska, Nashville freelancer, Wayne Robbins from the University of Texas, and Eric Zimmerman of the Davidson Metro Schools of Nashville.

The TTC first-place solo winners in the college undergraduate and high school divisions received cash prizes and were advanced as semi-finalists to the National Trumpet Competition held in March at George Mason University.
