With the help of his friends, ITG Board Member Anatoly Selianin of Saratov, Russia, recently had successful angioplasty procedures performed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Professor of Trumpet at the Saratov (Russia) Conservatory and Music Director of the Volga Band, Selianin was hospitalized for several weeks in December, 1999, and eventually told he needed bypass surgery. Unfortunately, there are very few sites in Russia which do that surgery, and the cost is prohibitive on a professor's salary. Upon learning of his predicament, several of his friends began a campaign to raise money to have the operation performed in the USA. Friends and colleagues from around the world contributed to this cause. The Mayo Clinic was then contacted. When they reviewed Selianin's situation, as well as his importance for many years as a source of trumpet information to and from the former USSR and current Russian Federation, they agreed to do the operation without charge.

On May 9, Anatoly flew to Cleveland, where he stayed with his daughter, Olga, who is a graduate student at Case Western. Then, the two flew to Minnesota where further tests showed the need for angioplasty, rather than bypass surgery. Several arteries were opened by angioplasty, and Anatoly was sent back to Cleveland on May 15. Feeling much better and physically much stronger, Professor Selianin was able to attend the board meeting preceding the ITG Conference in Purchase, NY, May 23 - 26, as well as the conference itself.

The entire cost of travel and the operations was covered by donations from friends, and the generosity of the Mayo Clinic.
