 | | David Guerrier | The 10th annual Porcia International Brass Solo Competition took place on December 6-11, 1999, in Porcia, Italy. The competition rotates between trumpet, horn, and trombone over a three-year period, and 1999 was the year for the trumpet. The winners of the competition are as follows: David Guerrier of France, a student of Pierre Dutot at the Lyons Conservatory was awarded first place; Andrej Kowalinskij of Bielorussia, a student of Reinhold Friedrich at the Padagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe, was awarded second place; and Tora Thorslund of Sweden, a past student of Bo Nillson and third trumpet of the Royal Opera, was awarded third place.
Noted as one of the most important competitions in Europe, the Porcia event attracted a large number of high-quality trumpet players from around the world. The jury for the competition consisted of Gabriele Bellini, Italy (president); Eric Aubier, France; Stephen Burns, United States; Gabriele Cassone, Italy; Juoko Harjanne, Finland; Bo Nillson, Sweden; and Marc Ullrich, France.
