The Northlands Chapter of the International Trumpet Guild sponsored its second annual Northlands Trumpet Competition on March 24-25, 2000, hosted by Del Lyren of Bemidji State University. The two day event, held on the campus of BSU, involved a guest recital and clinic by Vince DiMartino in addition to the competition. On Friday night, March 24th, in front of a packed house, DiMartino performed with BSU's Jazz I and the Bemidji Jazz Quartet. The concert was an incredible display of DiMartino's dazzling technique and powerful sound.
The next morning the nine finalists for the competition performed a prepared piece chosen from a list of Concert Etude - Goedicke, Willow Echoes - Simon, or Carnival of Venice - Clarke. Finalists were Heidi Nelson (Grand Forks, ND), Curtis Voss (Tintah, MN), Brandon Jacque (Pelican Rapids, MN), Bob Bernard (Freeport, MN), David Hartley (Eitzen, MN), Tori Hoerth (Lakota, ND), Erik Hasselquist (Stillwater, MN), Vince Gerrish (Filer, ID), and Amy Bjerke (Williston, ND). DiMartino served as the judge for the final round; and after an enthusiastically presented clinic on Saturday afternoon, he announced Vince Gerrish and Heidi Nelson as co-winners and Bob Bernard as 2nd place.
In addition to an ITG affiliate chapter grant, the 2000 Northlands Trumpet Competition received financial support from Yamaha Band Instruments of America. Next year's Northlands Trumpet Competition will take place on March 9-10, 2001, with Mike Vax as the guest artist.
