If the words and music of a single trumpet player and pedagogue were to shine over the musical millennium summer in Europe, they are those of former Canadian Brass trumpeter Fred Mills. He has crisscrossed Europe month after month, making enthusiastic students exceed their potential while performing under the guidance of, and together with, the trumpet player from their favorite CDs.

From July 25th to 29th he visited the Château de Villersexel (Franche-Comté, France) which was hosting its first Trumpet Summit: Mudance 2000. Mr. Mills' students included Manuel Lichtenwöhrer from Linz, Austria and Dominic Müller of Basel, Switzerland. The pianist performing and assisting the classes and recitals was Ms. Anne Foisy of Paris, France.

Private lessons and master classes were held on the historic grounds of the majestic Château.

Students performed works such as Malcom Arnold's Fantasy for Solo Trumpet, Oskar Böhme's Andante & Allegro, and Handel's Eternal Source of Light. Mills played an evening concert featuring Debussy's La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair), Manfredini's Concerto for 2 Trumpets, and Bolling's Rag Polka.

Mudance includes a ballet and dance department, and Mills accompanied the dance students during the closing performance. The director of the festival, Galina Gladkova-Hoffmann, developed choreography for Bolling's Rag Polka which Mills performed with the ballet class. The mutual inspiration shared by the performers was evident to all.

A second Trumpet Summit is being planned for next summer, and it will most likely be part of a brass quintet master course.
