The New York Philharmonic will present the world premiere of Lowell Liebermann's Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, Op.64 as part of its subscription season on May 25, 26, and 27, 2000. The Concerto was commissioned by Helen Marsteller Treutel and John Marsteller in memory of Edward Treutel, who was for many years on the trumpet faculty of the Juilliard School of Music. The Concerto will be performed by Treutel's former pupil, Philharmonic principal trumpet Philip Smith, and conducted by Kurt Masur. All performances begin at 8 p.m. at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center. Also featured on the program will be Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 "Leningrad."

Lowell Liebermann is one of only a handful of young American composers in their thirties whose music has garnered numerous performances and has won acceptance with audiences. As Composer-in-Residence of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Liebermann recently attended the February premiere of his Symphony No. 2 in Dallas. This August he will become the Composer-in-Residence for the Chamber Music program of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY, where several of his works will be performed, including the Flute Concerto under Charles Dutoit and featuring flutist Jeffrey Khaner.
