Dr. Leonard A. Candelaria was honored at a substantial brass concert at the University of North Texas College of Music on Saturday, April 8, 2000. The event was billed as "a musical celebration of twenty-five years of teaching at the University of North Texas." The concert featured Dr. Candelaria along with a number of his present and former trumpet students in a variety of styles and settings.

The program featured Dr. Candelaria as soloist and conductor, and included many of his former students. The program included, among other pieces, Biber: Sonata à 7, Scheidt: Canzon, Méndez: La Virgen de la Macarena, Thad Jones: A Child is Born, and many other pieces. Dr. Candelaria brought the audience to its feet at the conclusion of the program with a resounding f''' at the end of Philip Smith's arrangement of Blessed Assurance.

Dr. Candelaria was elected to serve as 1993-95 President of the ITG and is now a member of the board of directors. He has performed as trumpet soloist in concerts and masterclasses in numerous American cities and universities and around the world. Many of Professor Candelaria's students occupy positions in symphony orchestras, professional bands, and colleges & universities around the world.
