Allen Vizzutti Recital
From July 28-August 6, in Kalavrita, Greece, students from across Europe came this summer to participate in the 3rd International Course for Brass Instruments, organized principally by Gerassimos Ioannidis, professor at the Orpheon Conservatory in Athens and a member of the Athens Opera Orchestra. Ioannidis studied with James Stamp, Thomas Stevens, Maurice André, Pierre Thibaud, Bo Nilsson, David Hickman and Timofei Dokshizer, and he passed along this considerable knowledge in individual lessons to more than thirty students during the course.

American Allen Vizzutti presented a number of master classes. Anyone who has been to a class presented by Vizzutti knows how his flow of musical energy can change a person's attitude to practicing forever, and so it was at this course. As this was Vizzutti's first time in Greece, people from all over the country came to enjoy the recital he presented during the course. On the program was Telemann's Concerto in D, Staiger's Carnival of Venice, and some of his own compositions: The Rising Sun, and Prelude and Presto. This latter piece is for brass quintet, where he performed with John Karampetsos, trumpet, Vagelis Skouras, horn, Roger Bobo, tuba, and Enrique Crespo (from German Brass), trombone. Also on the program were a Gershwin Medley (for brass quintet and piano featuring Efi Papathomaidi) and Over the Rainbow. Roger Bobo closed the recital gently with Roger Kellaway's The Morning Song.

An impressive new ensemble now appearing on European stages highlighted the opening concert for the course: Women of Brass! What makes this group unique is its instrumentation (three trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba) in combination with the voice of Katja Heuzeroth, a vocalist who lives and works in New York. The three trumpet players are: Laura Vukabratovic (piccolo), Marie Therese Hopfenzitz (both former students of Reinhold Friedrich) and Steffi Deckers (former student of Hannes Läubin and Victoria Roulston).

The conference also included a Brass Concert, with all students participating, under the direction of Gerassimos Ioannidis. The final day was celebrated with a concert featuring every instrument, brass and woodwind, in an exciting program. Professors of the course gave performances including Vizzutti's of Napoli, under the direction of professor Ioannidis.

The 4th International Course for Brass Instruments will take place next year again in Kalavrita, 100 miles west of Athens, from August 3-12, 2001.
