Trumpeter Gaston Darrell Holt, a nationally-known clinician and longtime professor of music at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, died September 7 of complications from heart valve surgery.

Holt received his musical training at Stephen F. Austin and North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas). He was a member of the faculty at Stephen F. Austin for thirty years, teaching jazz studies and music theory.

Professor Holt was the leader of the Nacogdoches Jazz Band, which performs each summer at the Folklife Festival in San Antonio, Texas. He is also the conductor of the Second Time Around Band in Nacogdoches, which has just completed a new CD recording entitled Stormy Monday Blues.

Holt did extensive work in recording studios as a conductor, arranger, composer and performer with over one hundred jingles and forty albums to his credit. His latest recording endeavor was in April, 1999 when he was asked to arrange and conduct the orchestra for the newest LeAnn Rimes album. He also authored an arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner in current use by the US Navy Band and recently saw his Sonata for trumpet and piano published by Hidalgo Music.

In April 1989, Darrell was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award of the S.F.A. Music Department. In testimony to his remarkable influence on students, colleagues, and community, more than 1600 persons attended services celebrating his life.
